Parks, free workouts, playgrounds, piers, mailboxes, shipping counters. No ads, no ranking games — just what's there, with its source.
What's on the walls and in the halls — street art, landmarks, movie scenes, the museums and stages of the ledger — and the zips this one is twinned with, by decree and by geometry.
Bolom Ng Art Gallery
Ocotlán, Jalisco
Turn the globe inside out from the lagoon and you surface in western Mexico, near Lake Chapala. The nearest town is Ocotlán, a furniture-making city on the lake's eastern shore — landlocked, high and dry, the exact opposite of a reef village in every way that matters.
Ilha do Sal
Same parallel, longitude flipped across Greenwich — and the point falls in the South Atlantic. The nearest land is far north, but the closest kindred place is Cabo Verde: another Atlantic island nation of Creole language, séga-adjacent music and a diaspora larger than the population at home. Two archipelagos, one grammar.
Kanyakumari
Latitude mirrored above the equator: 20°N on this meridian lands in the Arabian Sea, off the Indian west coast. The nearest shore of consequence is the Indian subcontinent — where most of Flic-en-Flac's families came from, through the Aapravasi Ghat, after 1834. The mirror points home.
The zip's other residents — the animals, plants and corals you can actually meet here, with where to find them and when they show up.

Echo parakeet · Psittacula eques
The last surviving parrot of the Mascarenes, back from about twenty birds.

Mauritius kestrel · Falco punctatus
In 1974 four birds survived — the rarest bird on Earth. Captive breeding brought it back to the hundreds; the recovery is a textbook case.

Pink pigeon · Nesoenas mayeri
Down to ten birds in 1990, now several hundred. Endemic, and still fed and watched by the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation.

Red-whiskered bulbul · Pycnonotus jocosus
Introduced, crested and everywhere in the gardens and hotel hedges.

White-tailed tropicbird · Phaethon lepturus
'Paille-en-queue' — the streaming white tail-feathers over the coast are on the coat of arms.

Zebra dove · Geopelia striata
The soft repeating call under every casuarina on the beach.

Brain coral · Platygyra
Slow, boulder-like and furrowed like a walnut — some heads in the lagoon are older than the village's tourist trade.
Cabbage coral · Turbinaria
Stacked whorls like an open cabbage, turning the drop-off into terraces.

Fire coral · Millepora
Mustard-yellow blades that are not a true coral at all, and sting on contact. The reef's one rule: look, don't lean.

Staghorn coral · Acropora
The branching thickets that build the lagoon's floor and shelter everything smaller. Fast-growing and the first to bleach when the water runs hot.
Mauritius blue butterfly · Papilio manlius
A swallowtail found only on this island, flashing blue in the forest light.

Mauritian flying fox · Pteropus niger
A metre-wide fruit bat, endemic and endangered — and still culled over fruit crops, which is the island's sharpest conservation argument.
Clownfish · Amphiprion chrysogaster
The Mauritian anemonefish is endemic to these islands and lives nowhere else on Earth.

Green sea turtle · Chelonia mydas
Grazes the seagrass beds and surfaces to breathe; protected in Mauritian waters after centuries of being taken for meat.

Humpback whale · Megaptera novaeangliae
Passes the west coast on the winter migration, sometimes visible from the shore.

Moorish idol · Zanclus cornutus
Black, white and gold with a trailing dorsal filament — the postcard fish of the lagoon.

Octopus · Octopus cyanea
Hunted on the reef flat at low tide for centuries — 'ourite' is a Sunday curry as much as an animal.

Parrotfish · Scarus
You can hear them crunching coral. They excrete the white sand the beach is made of — a good beach is, literally, fish.
Sergeant major · Abudefduf vaigiensis
Yellow-and-black striped, fearless, and the first thing to greet a snorkeller.

Spinner dolphin · Stenella longirostris
Rests through the morning in the bay just south at Tamarin, spinning clear of the water. Boat traffic crowds them; watch from a distance.
Sugarcane · Saccharum officinarum
The crop that built the village before the beach did, and still walls the road inland in green.
Trochetia · Trochetia boutoniana
The boucle d'oreille, national flower of Mauritius, endemic to a single mountain — Le Morne, visible down the coast.
Ornate day gecko · Phelsuma ornata
Green flecked with red and blue, endemic, and quite happy on a hotel wall.

Banyan · Ficus benghalensis
Aerial roots dropping into new trunks; the old ones anchor village squares.

Filao (casuarina) · Casuarina equisetifolia
The whispering needle-pines planted the length of the public beach — the shade the whole island picnics under.

Flamboyant · Delonix regia
Blazes scarlet over the summer holidays — in Mauritius it flowers for Christmas, not June.
Every way in, out and across the zip — the trains and where they're headed, the buses, the bike docks, a cab when you need one, and what to do with a car.
The block from below and at the corner — the traffic signals that time the street, and the manholes, drains and subway mouths that open onto everything running beneath it. Counted from OpenStreetMap; the parts no city publishes are named, not guessed.
Count is OpenStreetMap-derived — it maps each signalized crossing separately, so approaches are clustered into intersections (≈, not exact). The timing isn't public at all: per-signal cycle plans aren't published. Most run fixed, coordinated cycles you can learn by standing at the corner; some busier crossings are sensor-actuated or adaptive to live traffic — where a city states which, it's tagged above; where it won't, it reads Not published.
Nothing ledgered under the street yet — manholes, drains and subway access arrive on the next OpenStreetMap sync.
Every café, restaurant, bar and counter on the ledger — typed and faceted straight from the knowledge layer.

Under watch§ 10
The police surveillance technology documented over this block — plate readers, cameras, drones, face recognition and the rooms that pool them. Counted from the Atlas of Surveillance; a category with none documented is marked as such, never guessed, because absence of a record is not proof a tool isn't in use.
- FRFace recognitionnone documented
Software that matches faces from cameras or photos against a database to put a name to a person — often without their knowledge or consent.
none documented in Flic-en-Flac — Maurice - ALPRLicense plate readersnone documented
Cameras that photograph every passing plate and log where and when it was seen, building a searchable map of a car's movements over months or years.
none documented in Flic-en-Flac — Maurice - CSSCell-site simulatorsnone documented
“Stingray” devices that impersonate a cell tower so nearby phones connect to them, revealing the location and identity of every handset in range.
none documented in Flic-en-Flac — Maurice - PPPredictive policingnone documented
Algorithms that forecast where crime will happen or who is likely to be involved, directing patrols and scrutiny toward people and blocks by statistics.
none documented in Flic-en-Flac — Maurice - UASDronesnone documented
Unmanned aircraft used for aerial surveillance, crowd monitoring and, increasingly, as first responders dispatched to calls with cameras rolling.
none documented in Flic-en-Flac — Maurice - GSDGunshot detectionnone documented
Networks of always-on microphones on streetlights and buildings that listen for gunfire — and can capture voices — then send police to the sound.
none documented in Flic-en-Flac — Maurice - VAVideo analyticsnone documented
AI layered onto camera feeds to automatically flag people, objects or behaviour, and to search hours of footage for a shirt colour, a bag, a face.
none documented in Flic-en-Flac — Maurice - REGCamera registrynone documented
A roster of private security cameras — doorbells, shops, homes — that residents register or connect, letting police pull footage from across the block.
none documented in Flic-en-Flac — Maurice - BWCBody-worn camerasnone documented
Cameras worn by officers. A record of encounters that can protect the public — but also a mobile, searchable feed whose footage the department controls.
none documented in Flic-en-Flac — Maurice - TPIInvestigative data platformsnone documented
Commercial services that pool phone, location, social-media and public records into one search, letting police buy access to data they'd need a warrant to collect.
none documented in Flic-en-Flac — Maurice - RTCCReal-time crime centernone documented
A control room fusing live camera, plate, gunshot and phone feeds onto one wall — the hub that turns scattered sensors into continuous watching.
none documented in Flic-en-Flac — Maurice - FCFusion centernone documented
A state or regional office where local, state and federal agencies share intelligence — pooling records on people across jurisdictions with little public oversight.
